Fools Gold

A prospector named Caleb Rowe leaves his wife Mae and his ordinary life in Maryland behind, selling his father's pocket watch to chase the promise of gold in the mountains of Virginia City, Nevada. He finds nothing but an empty mine and a year of failure, while back home Mae quietly builds a life without him and the town's shrewd land speculator Percy Holt circles like a vulture waiting for Caleb to give up. On the morning Caleb hits rock bottom, he notices something in the rubble-lined streets of Virginia City — the waste rock he and every other failed miner had been hauling out of their mines and paving the roads with for months turns out to be high-grade silver ore. With the help of his grizzled partner Dutch and the razor-sharp saloon keeper Evangeline, Caleb reclaims the streets, outmaneuvers Percy, sends for Mae, and discovers that the fortune he crossed a continent to find had been right under his boots the whole time — and that the life worth having was the one he almost threw away to find it.
